Why Termite Treatments Should Always Start With an Inspection

(And When They Don’t)

If you’ve been told you need a termite treatment or barrier, you might be wondering why pest companies insist on doing an inspection first.

The short answer: because skipping that step is how people waste money and miss the real problem.

Here’s how a proper termite treatment process actually works, and the few situations where we may approach things differently.

The typical termite treatment process

A professional termite job isn’t just “spray and go”. It’s a structured process designed to find the source of the problem and treat it properly.

Here’s what it usually looks like:

1. Full termite inspection

We assess your home and surrounding areas for any termite activity, damage, and overall risk factors, including the current level of protection in place.

2. Identify key details

This includes:

  • Whether termites are active or old damage

  • The species of termite (some are highly destructive, while others are slower feeders)

  • Entry points and high-risk areas

  • Moisture issues or conditions attracting termites

3. Recommend the right treatment

Depending on what we find, this could include:

  • Direct treatment for active termites using liquids or baits

  • A termite management system (baiting stations or a chemical barrier around your home)

  • Preventative measures to reduce future risk

4. Carry out the treatment

We target the problem based on actual findings, not guesswork. The goal is to resolve the root cause, not apply a temporary fix that leads to ongoing issues.

5. Follow-up (if required)

Active infestations often require multiple visits to ensure the colony is properly controlled.

Why we don’t skip the inspection

We get it. Sometimes people just want to book the treatment and move on.

But here’s the reality:

  • Conditions change quickly – Soil, moisture, weather, and building conditions all influence termite risk over time.

  • It’s more than just termites – A proper inspection also assesses rot, mould, moisture issues, and other timber pest risks.

  • Old reports become outdated – Even a recent inspection is just a snapshot in time.

  • The wrong treatment can make the problem worse – Some clients request a barrier when the real issue is active termites that need immediate treatment. We’ve seen cases where a barrier was installed while termites were already inside the structure, effectively trapping them in and allowing damage to continue, and the problem becoming way more costly in the long run.

Skipping the inspection is a bit like trying to fix a leak without finding where the water’s coming from.

When we can make an exception

There are some situations where we may not require a separate inspection first.

This is usually when the termite activity is clearly detached from the home, such as:

  • Tree stumps

  • Fences

  • Retaining walls

  • Garden structures

In these cases, we can often:

  • Treat the affected area, and

  • Carry out a termite inspection at the same time

We’ll usually combine these at a reduced cost, since we’re already on-site.

That said, we always recommend a full termite inspection if any termite activity on has been seen or suspected, to ensure it hasn’t spread to the home and to properly assess overall risk.

“Can I just book a termite barrier without an inspection?”

Short answer: no.

A termite barrier isn’t a one-size-fits-all product. It needs to be designed based on your property’s current conditions.

Without an inspection:

  • We don’t know your risk areas

  • We can’t assess soil type or drainage

  • We may miss existing termite activity

Installing a barrier without that information can make it ineffective from day one.

What if I already have an inspection report?

If you’ve recently had an inspection and are getting quotes for a barrier, we can usually work with that.

  • If your report is very recent (within ~12 weeks), we may be able to provide a quote based on it

  • We’ll still do a quick check of the structure on the day of installation to confirm conditions.

This is also important for insurance, and ensuring the treatment is installed correctly based on current conditions.

The bottom line

A termite inspection isn’t an upsell. It’s the foundation of doing the job properly.

If you’re investing in protecting your home, it makes sense to base that decision on accurate, up-to-date information.
